Obama seeks new “consolidation authority” power grab

The White House will announce today the President’s plan to ask Congress for greater executive authority in shaping government. Under the promise of streamlining and reducing the size of government, Obama will seek “consolidation authority”—a presidential power exercised throughout the New Deal and Great Society eras, but which was allowed to lapse in 1984 under Reagan.

If Congress assents, it will essentially be handing Obama “fast track” authority which limits Congress’ ability to hinder the President’s agendas. Once agreed, any government restructuring mergers the President proposes to Congress that promise (“promise”) to save money or benefit consumers will require Congress to provide a simple up-or-down vote within 90 days.

To persuade them to relinquish such power, certainly, Obama must not at first appear to have too radical of an agenda for using it. Thus, the White House’s only proposal so far is being portrayed as “streamlining” and “shrinking the federal government.” Associated Press announced that the president’s first plan will consolidate six Commerce agencies, take burdens off of businesses, cut 1,000 government jobs (albeit only through attrition), and save $3 billion (albeit only stretched across 10 years).

While any proposal too radical could easily be squashed in the current House by a simple up-or-down vote in principle, the political pressure against voting down any measure that alleges to cut spending and shrink government up front will likely be problematic even for conservatives.

For all his deviousness, this move is very cunning on Obama’s part. If Congress agrees, then it relinquishes power and submits to Obama’s leadership and authority. Obama comes out looking good. If Congress balks, it can be accused of not wanting to cut government size and spending after all. Congress looks bad. Heads he wins, tails they lose.

To maintain the upper hand, Congress must stop this power grab at the outset. Conservative Congressmen must respond by pointing to the President’s abysmal record of keeping promises, the joke that he would actually cut government power over the long haul—that this new power would not eventually be abused, the foolishness of giving power first and then learning the details later, and the menial savings this measure would achieve while being presented as a dramatic savings of billions by speaking in terms of “ten years.”

Not to mention the foolishness of trusting a big-government liberal to cut government size and spending in general. Meanwhile, Obama is asking for another $1.2 Trillion hike in the debt ceiling. Wonder what his real plans are for spending?

  6. Before the Constitution was written a group of George Washington's former officers suggested he '"take the throne" and declare himself King of the United States. Being a man of character Washington refused and firmly silenced any talk of creating a royal American government. When he was elected president by unanimous consent Washington did show a streak of vanity by presiding over official events and entertainments seated on a dias with Mrs. Washington by his side per the custom of a royal. Ambassadors, diplomats, and visitors on official government business were also announced to the president and received in this manner. But Washington also many times reminded those around him that he was the elected chief executive of a republic with a specified term of office so unlike a royal he could decline to serve when his term expired. Of course this he did after serving two terms thus setting the example for succeeding presidents. Washington had his faults and admitted such but he was a man of character. One shudders to think what Obama would have done had he been offered the opportunities George Washington turned down.

    and they either don't see it or they are in on it.
    And, this POS has not kept any of his promises that I know of.
    With a power like this obozo will surely finish his agenda to destroy America,
    it will allow him to suspend elections, just short of martial law, with the excuse
    of the need so as to facallitate government restructuring.

They will be passing anything he wants and saying no to anything he doesnt want. IF obama allows elections to contine nobody that opposses him will get elected.

Consolidation of power by a strong (re: tyrannical) central government was the greatest fear of our founders and the very reason that most states refused to acknowledge and ratify the original US Constitution as written unless the Bill of Rights was an integral and inseparable part of the document.

    Now, 223 yrs later, we have an SOB in the WH who wants to incinerate the very intent and scope of the original document. That in my view, is treason. Impeachment anyone?

  11. It is time to resurrect our Constitution, starting with tossing Obama out of the White House since he has failed to meet the requirement to even be the President. How big does the writing on the wall have to be for people to be able to read it? Once Obama has been evicted, we can start 'undoing' the damage he's already done over the past 3 years like firing a few Czars, getting rid of Obama's appointments, Executive Orders, etc. America better wake up PDQ, lest we lose our Sovereignty and the rest of our rights.

  19. Shrinking the government and giving more power to Obama, will do nothing more than hasten our demise as a country. However, I don't think that will change any of his actions even if he does not get this "consolidation authority " approval from Congress. He will simply sidestep their resistance and go ahead with his plans. This is simply a subterfuge to make him look like he is following the laws. He has repeatedly ignored the Constitution and acted on his own, so in effect, he will continue as usual.

If "Obumma" attempts to seize or ask for additional power from Congress, and if it changes any of the powers allocated only to Congress under OUR CONSTITUTION, it would require amendments to the Constitution. Such amendments would require approval by at least two thirds of the members of both Houses of Congress, and ratification by three fourths of the States. More than likely, Obama would be out of office before that would happen. Article I, Sections I, 7, 8 of our Constitution spell out the responsibility and power of Congress:
    Article I
    Section I All legislative Powers herein granted shall be vested in a Congress of the United States, which shall consist of a Senate and House of Representatives

    Section 7 All Bills for raising Revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives; but the Senate may propose or concur with Amendments as on other Bills.

    Section 8 The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States; but all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be uniform throughout the United States;

    To borrow Money on the credit of the United States;

    To regulate Commerce with foreign Nations, and among the several States, and with the Indian Tribes;

    To establish an uniform Rule of Naturalization, and uniform Laws on the subject of Bankruptcies throughout the United States;

    To coin Money, regulate the Value thereof, and of foreign Coin, and fix the Standard of Weights and Measures;

    To provide for the Punishment of counterfeiting the Securities and current Coin of the United States;

    To establish Post Offices and post Roads;

    To promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts, by securing for limited Times to Authors and Inventors the exclusive Right to their respective Writings and Discoveries;

    To constitute Tribunals inferior to the supreme Court;

    To define and punish Piracies and Felonies committed on the high Seas, and Offences against the Law of Nations;

    To declare War, grant Letters of Marque and Reprisal, and make Rules concerning Captures on Land and Water;

    To raise and support Armies, but no Appropriation of Money to that Use shall be for a longer Term than two Years;

    To provide and maintain a Navy;

    To make Rules for the Government and Regulation of the land and naval Forces;

    To provide for calling forth the Militia to execute the Laws of the Union, suppress Insurrections and repel Invasions;

    To provide for organizing, arming, and disciplining, the Militia, and for governing such Part of them as may be employed in the Service of the United States, reserving to the States respectively, the Appointment of the Officers, and the Authority of training the Militia according to the discipline prescribed by Congress;

    To exercise exclusive Legislation in all Cases whatsoever, over such District (not exceeding ten Miles square) as may, by Cession of particular States, and the Acceptance of Congress, become the Seat of the Government of the United States, and to exercise like Authority over all Places purchased by the Consent of the Legislature of the State in which the Same shall be, for the Erection of Forts, Magazines, Arsenals, dock-Yards, and other needful Buildings;–And

    To make all Laws which shall be necessary and proper for carrying into Execution the foregoing Powers, and all other Powers vested by this Constitution in the Government of the United States, or in any Department or Officer thereof.

    Our Constitution is the law of the land, and our Congress has the duty and power to enforce the provisions thereof. No changes can be made to our Constitution unless the people are away and approve of them. Our forefathers took great pains to see that no one individuals could ever be allowed totalitarian power over our government. Obama has worked steadily toward his goal of attaining total power, and abolishing our Constitution, probably at the urging or instruction of George Soros.

  27. Read the Rise and Fall of the Third Reich by William L. Shirer. Hitler did the exact same thing and was given the power and look how many innocent people were killed because of it.   39. When will we see the Supreme Court acting on our behalf to satisfy the public by demanding full Records as to the Birth Certificate issue of Obama in the interest of national security.
    We also need full implementation of the photo ID at the voters polling place to insure as good as possible that there will be no voter fraud.
    There is one big issue that needs to be dealt with by us the people and that is to put pressure on the Congress and the Senate to dealing with the Lawless acts of Obama in his violating our Constitution by filing charges of Obama not living up to the Oath of office.
    Obama’s claim this new move is to reducing the size of government is pure BS and only designed to effectively give him the supreme power over government.
    This is something we need to put the pressure on congress to seeing that it never happens because Obama being fully in the drivers seat of governmental policy would bring down all levels of freedom in America as we know it today.

If he is reelected, America will become a third world country, run under Sharia law. Right now Obama is more dangerous to the security, liberty, freedoms, and sovereignty of America than any of our external enemies. This man has to be retired so he can go home to Kenya and take over the reigns of government in his home country.
