School suspends student for catching teacher asleep
“A teacher’s nap in class ended up becoming a rude awakening for a student,” Oklahoma City news station KOCO reports on its website.
Mustang Public Schools officials said a ninth-grader snapped a photo of a snoozing substitute with a cellphone last Friday at Mustang Mid-High School.
The student was later suspended. The move is not sitting well with some parents.
“If anything, they should have been reprimanded for having a phone, but they probably took it to an extreme because they caught a teacher doing something they weren’t supposed to be doing,” parent Steven Graulich said. . . . “If the teacher was sleeping, then the school needs to investigate that.”
The school district said it will not discuss any disciplinary actions taken against either the student or the teacher. So far we have heard of discipline for only the student.

Double standard. Good example as to why our education system has gone to hell in a hand basket.
UNIONS UNIONS UNIONS-ya gotta love their lack of common sense-That teacher had some ones children in their care and went to sleep on the job! If that was a teenaged child sitter and somthing went awry- the sitter would be crucified! So lets Punish the child—NOT!
…and people wonder why public ecucation SUX! DUH! Under their rule system watch how this scenario goes: ‘The dog ate my homework’…Let’s punish the book company whose text contained the homework, and let’s punish the pencil mfg who would have allowed you to do the homework….there, all handled and LORD, do we feel GOOD about ourselves!
"They" – It was one student who took the photo, but he/she suffers from multiple personality disorder, is that why the plural form is used here? And the sub teacher also suffers from MPD – is that why he/she is a "they?" i am so sick of this silly attempt at neutral language in English! Most other languages groups assign gender to inatimate things such as tables and chairs and the pronouns follow the gender – in America we've allowed this idiot language form to take over So why couldn't the student be identified as He or She? Why couldn't the teacher be identified by gender? It MATTERS and it irritates me to hear/see this incongruency in English. Of course the greater issue is why was this child punished? If the child was mine – i'd be hauling the Principle, Superintendent and the School Board into court!
My Goodness jayleigh, while I agree with you on the issue of the child part I too would let them have a day in the Courtroom! But who peed in your cornflakes this morning? Are you an English teacher or something? I used to and still love to write and say incorrect grammar just to tick off a female English friend of my wifes and she would become super indignant and sot of angry at me and I loved it. In other words Lighten up a bit!, don't have a Coronary over Dis here ardicle! LOL!
Besides all that jayleigh what does it matter the gender of either to you? Did you need that so that you could do a little professional gender bashing or something along that lines!? I really do not see why they needed to be so sexist to satisfy your personal whims. Now all you have to do is dump the bowl of peed in cornflakes and wash the bowl then pour you up a new bowl. Bet that sentence tore your fanny up, huh?
In this case the parents of the students should contact the state Dept of Education, or whatever its called in Oklahoma, and request an investigation at the state level. Just say "I believe the local officials are trying to whitewash the incident in favor of the local school system."
The child is the scapegoat because the teachers union will not tolerate a teacher being caned for sleeping in class.
Well, not totally are you forgetting the Cell phone issue? Duh! it is against the rules for students to carry them into class as they have no better sense than to do the obvious wrong things with them not to mention the teacher gets to listen to 20 to 30 different ring tones. I'd say that that evil teacher's union (forgive the redundancy) had its mitts on this one. If that were my child I'd be rewarding him/her- and on the phone to a lawyer.
AND THERE FOLKS lies the problem with UNIONIZED SLACKERS.
This is not a double standard, it's simply a common union worksite condition, both the union member sleeping, and no punishment, because of the union control of the educational system, and retribution for anyone who causes the union embarrasment or trouble. They don't call them union thugs for no reason at all. Private schools consists of 90% or more religious schools, that don't allow for union teachers in order to be able to hold their teachers accountable, and is the main reason all of the private schools are successful and their sudents out-perform public school students on all test scores. This article is just one small example of why the public schools do not educate as well as the private schools, and this goes on at all union worksites, not just in teaching.

Today a poll showed nearly 60% of all liberals, conservatives, and independent would check a box to toss all of congress if such a choice was available on voting day. that polster should see how many of us would vote out our school boards and administrators in the same fashion, if able. Is this a sign that a wide scale term limits constitutional amendment would pass if the public were presented with the vote today?
Unions – serving and protecting incompetence since the 1870's. You can take pics of anybody in just about in any situation even if it's inappropriate, but you cannot take a pic of any union member. Just as the police will put you in jail if you just so happen have a camera strapped to your helmet while riding a bike and they pull you over and pull a gun out on you without identifying themselves first.
The kid shouldn't even be reprimanded for the cell phone.
The unions all need to go they are distroying are country they are evil and want to control us people that work for them need to wake up and see what they are doing to are country when the jobs run out what will they do then the unions wont care they have all they want stop the unions now before it is to late

Get rid of the Unions yes, only if you can make OSHA and NLRB honest and more responsive to the employee needs. For Companies still have a tendancy to abuse on personality basis and Chronyism and Nepotism and all the ism's abound in many companies to this date! If Companies would set up their own grievance process and pay for arbitrations on serious cases rather than waiting to get sued bye employees they might find that they will be ahead of the game a bit! I know some of your radical remarks will be like if you do not like it quit!~ But is this the real answer to all employee company relations. Some Companies lose valuable resources due to dumb employee relations. In otherwords do you know why Supervisors are like diapers (and I was one)? answer: They are always on your ass and they are usually full of shit!

Unions. Public sector unions especially. They have bankrupted many states no longer able to pay their cushy perks. Now they protect a teacher not teaching against a student taking a photo of the slacking. Suspension for taking a photo of a public employee, paid by the taxpayers (our local school tax is greater than all other portions allocated in our property tax–that includes city policie, sherrif's office, roadwork, city adminstrator and administration, mayor, twice a week house trash pickup, and all other local and county/parish government tax allocations–that is likely true in many towns throughout the U.S.)? Enough is enough.
Well parkcityute, run off some of those celebrities that your city wants to suck up to and find that things can be much cheaper! But if and your City is catering to the Rich and the famous then guess what is likely to be very high!?
And now you know why so many kids want to quit school. And, you also know why someone like myself , who taught Engsih and loved working with the kids, QUIT a long time ago. WAKE UP AMERICA

It was a substitute teacher. They were employed by the district for one day. No contract. No union protection. All the school can do is never call that person again. To be a substitute at the high school level only a 4-year degree (in any field) is required. This may or may not be a licensed teacher.
I'm no fan of unions either, but to get on a soap box decrying the union's protection this teacher's job shows a lack of understanding of this situation.
This is an outrage that a student gets punished because he reported his teacher taking a nap while on the job. This world is going down the tubes very rapidly.
We have no one to blame but our selves- Just because we elected them dos'nt mean they don't need to be watched -we neglected our fore fathers warnings by not WATCHING TEIR EVERY MOVE WITH WHAT WE INTRUSTED THEM WITH-namley OUR GOD AND FORE FATHERS RIGHTS- simply put-when you put your money in the bank or into investments-do you not watch your bank and investment peopleevry week or month or year and make adjustments to your benifit so as not to lose what you have worked for–Well , SAME THING GOES FOR POLITICIANS- THEY ARE OUR APPOINTEES TO OUR COUNTRIES AND OUR PERSONAL LIBERTIES SAFE KEEPING-It looks like they think it's theirs for the keeping-and wwe have been letting them keep it ——OUR FAULT!- WHAT SAY YOU AMERICA — TIRED OF WORKING FOR SOME ONE ELSE YET!

Further proof of the uselessness of the school system both public & private: They have been said to not actually teach anything but teach "how to learn". I guess we'll add, "Do as they say not as they do" to the list i.e. don't question authority even when it's obviously wrong. It is a waste of time for the children & should be streamlined & revamped to actually teach things of a useful nature instead of dragging out a twelve year curriculum to early adulthood leaving the children somewhat bitter & with no actual skills to earn a living or ideas of how to do so.
Why not cameras in the classroom? Many public schools make use of cameras for the outside of campus but why not IN THE CLASSROOM?
Typical of the offenders being caught doing something they should not be doing – hide behind bureaucracy. Cops in far too many states are using the law to hide behind – preventing citizens or even the press from filming them while working if they do not wish to be filmed.
What part of 'public' is so private that those 'serving' (fire, police, teachers at public schools, politicians, etc…) should not be amiable to be viewed by the public?
Answer can ONLY be that they have something to hide.
