Bailout Nation: Santorum attacks Romney but gets blasted by Paul

by Joel McDurmon on Feb 20, 2012

Mitt Romney often touts his leadership with the Olympics as evidence of his ability to turn this nation around. But as rival Rick Santorum noted this weekend, Romney’s leadership was hardly something of which a conservative should boast. Newsmax reports,

Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum, appealing to tea party and Christian groups in Ohio on Saturday, criticized rival Mitt Romney for seeking a “bailout” for the 2002 Winter Olympics and complaining about congressional earmarks.

The former Pennsylvania senator told a group of tea party activists in Columbus that while Romney has criticized him for accepting earmarks and often cites running the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City as an accomplishment, Romney sought federal assistance for the games.

“He heroically bailed out the Salt Lake City Olympic games by heroically going to Congress and asking them for tens of millions of dollars to bail out the Salt Lake Olympic games, in an earmark,” Santorum said. “Does the word hypocrisy come to mind?”

The Romney campaign responded by saying that a majority of federal funds for the Salt Lake City games were spent on security in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, unlike earmarks Santorum has sought. Romney was in Salt Lake City on Saturday to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the 2002 Winter Olympics.

Santorum was correct to criticize this less-popularized episode of Bailout Nation (which conservatives have been lock-step along with liberals in leading). But the problem with Santorum’s charge of hypocrisy here is that it comes back on him, too.

Santorum’s voting record has been rehearsed in many places. The conservative group Club for Growth has noted as well Santorum’s leanings toward big-government, reporting that the former Senator has a “mixed record” on taxes, spending, free markets, and regulation to name a few. The report concludes Santorum’s “record contains more than a few weak spots that make us question if he would resist political expediency when it comes to economic issues.”

For this reason, Ron Paul blasted the blaster Sunday morning and called Santorum’s voting record “atrocious.” Christian Post reports,

GOP presidential hopeful, Rep. Ron Paul, has rebuked rival Sen. Rick Santorum for being overly liberal, claiming he was not a sufficient candidate to take on President Obama in this year’s presidential elections, during CNN’s “State of the Union with Candy Crowley” on Sunday.

“His voting record is … from my viewpoint, an atrocious voting record — how liberal he’s been in all the things he’s voted for over the many years he was in the Senate and in the House,” Paul said.

  1. Thank you for being one of the very few media outlets reporting on the hypocrisy of the so-called conservative candidates. If the GOP nominates a moderate, we will get Obama for another four years. Liberty-minded voters like myself will no longer hold our noses and vote for these progressive-light nominees like we’ve been dealt in the past. Anyone but Congressman Paul and this country is headed for a fiscal disaster.

  2. this is so true, unfortunately. I do recognize that.

this article suggests the tone that Paul is not a serious contender, though, and doesn't emphazise his benefits. I wish it did, but then again, this isn't a ron paul website.

  3. Santorum has proven himself to be an unwavering conservative in the social areas of greatest importance to the party base, concerning life and marriage. Unlike Paul, Santorum is also going to lead the nation to be restored to standing by our ally Israel, the one democracy remaining in the middle east and that is the morally correct position for our nation to take. Paul is now totally desperate since he has not yet won a single state in the primaries and so really does not have a ghost of a chance of taking the nomination, thank God. At CPAC recently, over 90 conservative leaders from across America turned out to give Santorum their support and Rush Limbaugh has recently done the same. I think that a Santorum-Rubio ticket would be unbeatable and great for getting our nation back on track into a rightward direction!

  4. Gawd I wish people could see, Ron Paul for what he really is, if you know people and how to read them a watch the way they talk and walk and hold them selfs, tells you a lot about the person. Ron Paul Cares priod, he loves his Country, and he is a simple man, with morals and not afraid to say it like it is.

He wants this Country back the way it once was and even better, less goverment, and everything this Country stands for, he is old enough to understand, the way it use to be, a strong nation, for the people by the people , I really don't think he can be bought, he has lived it, says a lot he really doesnt have a ego.
If only people could see that , we might have a chance for change for real change and really thats what we should all want. We could depend on our own oil and take care of healing this Country, and then maybe if it works out we could help our foreign friends but until we fix this mess we are in , its only going to get worse.

  6. And it’s… just think of what happened after 9/11. Immediately, before there was any assessment, there was glee in the administration because now we can invade Iraq. So the war drums beat…

Perfect. Just great. Remember that the less crazy truthers out there don’t get bogged down in scientific nonsense like “fire can’t melt steel.” They don’t necessarily believe that the Bush administration actually put bombs in the WTC to help it come down (although they’re not precisely ruling it out). What they DO believe is that the U.S. government was warned by the Israelis/Saudis/French/whoever that the attacks were coming and deliberately ignored it because they wanted 9/11 to happen so they could go to war in Afghanistan and Iraq.

    −stillmoral
    • Ron Paul has now moved from saying that 9/11 was our fault (which was despicable enough) to now saying that it’s something our government actually wanted to happen. Put this up there with Ron Paul’s belief that Southeast Asia got much better after we left Vietnam (a viewpoint doubtless shared by millions of massacred Southeast Asians – but hey, at least we trade with Vietnam now) on the all time list of Ron Paul’s contemptible and publicly-expressed beliefs. Add to this the fact that Ron Paul is a liar and a hypocrite on spending, who has built a career larding up appropriations bills with pork for his home district and then casting meaningless votes against their final passage, and I have to confess that I don’t really see the appeal of Ron Paul to Iowa voters. Well, the Republican ones, at least.

    • "U.S. government was warned by the Israelis/Saudis/French/whoever that the attacks were coming and deliberately ignored it because they wanted 9/11 to happen so they could go to war in Afghanistan and Iraq."

There is documentation and official testimony proving this, are you deliberately stupid?

      −SteveDe
      • OMG another conspiracy nutjob. Where's your proof? where's the official testimony? Go take another hit on your Ron Paul bong.

  7. I’d really hoped to avoid posting much more if anything on RON PAUL2012!!!!!11!!!!! anytime soon, but, think how this would play on CBS Evening News during the general election time as we get the Ron Paul Quote Of The Day about Bradley Manning, on trial for treason for giving national security to Wikileaks (via Ace)

(Accuracy in Media) ……Paul has called Manning, a crossdresser with acknowledged mental problems, a “hero” and “patriot” for stealing government secrets and providing them to WikiLeaks.

However, speaking at a campaign rally, Paul said that while Manning may have “technically” broken the law against releasing classified information to WikiLeaks, he did so for the purpose of exposing the “horrible things” being carried out by the U.S. Government.

Referring to Manning’s detention before trial, Paul said, “Should he be locked up and imprisoned?” Manning should be seen as a “political hero” and “true patriot who reveals what’s going on,” Paul said.

    • This article merely looks like hearsay from a disgruntled former employee to me- I would love to see actual quotes from Ron Paul and documented sources .I am perfectly willing to listen if you can show me facts that document that what you say is true.I have received this same article from several people from whom I asked documented proof of these nonsensical comments. I have specifically looked up his statements and positions on the issues you mentioned and it appears to me that you are drawing erroneous conclusions from statements he has made. He has explained them numerous times. Do you not think that if the News Media, DNC & GOP could show articles with quotes from him or film clips of him saying these things, they would? It would be irrefutable, he would lose almost all of his support and they would finally make him irrelevant. Instead they ignore him. Why?

      −Merit K
      • I am sorry you cannot face the truth about Ron Paul. No one is bothering to show anything about him because he has no chance of ever being the candidate. Even he knows it. He said all those things and I heard him say them at the time when they were in the news.

        −stillmoral
  9. Ron Paul Is the best one the ones that call him names are crazye there selfs they are blind and out of touch with the ameican ways go ahead and vote for the Rinos and see what happens to this country they will keep takeing us down untill we are gone

    −Maxine
  10. I suggest that you review his record and do not just listen to what Newt says- he is a good speaker, but his 20 year record of broken promises, smooth talking and big government support, shows that he is not as conservative as he would now like us to believe.

    −Merit K
    • I have reviewed his record, extensively. I wouldn't be supporting him if I didn't think he had an outstanding record. What brokern promises are you referring to? His contract with America in where the Republicans swept the House and took control after 40 years? His 4 balanced budgets? His cutting welfare? HIs getting Slick Willie to move more to the center? Sorry that you are just another misinformed individual who blindly supports someone of the calibre of liar "Porkulus Paul". His claim to fame in 25 lackluster years in Congress is serial violation of Article 1 Section 8 of the Constitutution by sticking earmarks in bills and then voting no. Then the fraud says, I never voted for an earmark. He is #4 in bringing home the pork. As for leadership ability, he has had one minor bill pass in all the time he has been in Congress.

  11. I just can't vote for a man who wears sweater vests…

  12. Unfortunately for Ron Paul and his die-hard Libertarian socio-political ideology it leaves out "social conservativism"…and an email from his campain today stated as such, therefore he has no chance at all in drawing sincere Biblical Christians into his camp. As a Christian first and a conservative Constitutionalist second, I place my Christian faith and beliefs above this government and nation, knowing that doing so marginalizes myself as a independent Christian conservative who will never cowtow to a corrupt government…Democrate liberal progressive/socialist/Statist/communist or Republican (hardly any difference today). Maranatha! Come sweet Jesus, come quickly to catch up your true church.

    −Winston
  13. Talking about Liar, Most people like Paul they have just been fooled into believe he doesn't have much of a chance of winning my the media and shills like yourself.

What I do no is your NOT moral and YOU are a fraud.

    −SteveDe
    • Even Dr. Dementia himself has said he doesn't think he will get the nomination. Speaking or who's moral, you support a person who wants to legalize drugs. So don't go judging my morality just because I see this old traitor for what he is. And if most people like Paul why are his poll numbers consistently at the bottom of the barrel?

  14. Santorum rescued the most pro-abortion Senator, Arlen Specter, with his endorsement. It made the mathematical difference for Specter to defeat Toomey, who is at least nominally pro-life, if not better. Santorum voted for all sorts of socialist policies that are anti-family. He was "pro-life" when it cost him nothing, and like the GOP as a whole did NOTHING to outlaw abortion.

As to Israel, our Constitution does not allow for foreign aid. If you wish to help Israel, you should send them a check, but not use the force of government to make me do so.

Ron Paul is for liberty in the tradition of the founders. NONE of the others are anywhere close.

I will vote for Ron Paul even if I have to write his name in.

For those with irrational worries about Iran.

    −SteveDe
    • Are you serious?

Is this supposed to bolster the Ron Paul vision of Iran, or just make you look like a fool? Anyone who looks at the source can immediately tell they're in for a skewed version of the news, let's not even think about finding the truth from a CNN propagandist. This is the perfect reason for people to leave anything you post a wide birth and ignore it.

Stick to writing for the Huff Po crowd. I'm sure they love you there.

  16. WE had better get our thoughts on electing Newt Gringrich and forget about the o t hers as they have no plan to turn this country around and take it back from as Obama as does Newt and he can do it an dwill.

    −William Horton
  17. Severe problems require radical solutions. I am, of course, speaking of our out of control growth of government and the obvious absence of fiscal sanity that now haunts the halls of Congress and the White House. Are they feeding Obama and the Congress out of leaden pots? Have they ingested too much mercury or something? What happened to the ability to reason and comprehend that one just cannot possibly spend one's self out of debt, no matter how much of other peoples' money is stolen to do so? Ron Paul has the radical solutions to the problems that the Congress and White House have conjured up of late. I just hope that there are enough sane voters out there to save our republic. Vote Ron Paul.

  18. If you think Santorum is a conservative, you need a brain transplant. His liberal voting and various ethics violations got him soundly defeated in his last bid for reelection.

    • Thank you for speaking the truth about Rick.He is just another Dole,Ford and McCain all rolled into one.Once again,we are given the choice of moderates to choose from as they blow aside Newt and Dr.Paul.Take care and prepare.

      −Knightflyer
  19. Dr.Paul is the one true conservative,aConstitutionalist, and an honest man.He loves this nation and has made his plans availible for 20 plus years.Of the many things I agree with him on is the end to ALL forgien aid,yes even to our welfare child, israel. He wants a strong national defence.but as the Constitution states, does not want to become entangled in forgien matters. He has never said he does not care about Iran and nukes, but what he has said is that israel has the capibilities to protect themselves from Iran,Islamic Terrorist and the like.

    −Knightflyer23
    • I have lived in Dr Paul's area for 20+ years and I can assure you that he is not a conservative now, or ever. He is very knowlegeable and entertaining, but liberal as they come. The ACLU gives him a very high liberal rating.

      −Guest
  20. He cares deeply for the American fighting man or women(THAT IS WHY HE LEADS WITH A 2 TO ONE VOTE) and wants to bring them all home, close usless bases, stop spending billions on embasseys in I raq and the like and start spending the monies to pay down the national debt and get our country on track again. He is not one that belives in freebies but believes that the playing field should be fair when it comes to global trade. He is not an isolationist by any means. When was the last time you read anything truthful about Dr.Paul? Rick and Mitt,Newt et-el are all insiders with Mitt being the pick of the Country Club Republipukes. They do not pick wisely.Remember Ford,Dole,McCain.Paul could win against obongo simply by using obongo's own words against him.But I fear,he will never get the chance because he is hated from both sides.I fear what is coming soon. But as the Founders put it,and I paraphrase, when it is time to clean house it is the duty of every red blooded American to do what is nescerry to restore our Constitutional Republic. This will occur, the anger grows and the REAL Americans prepare.

    −Knightflyer23
  21. Nice try "Guest" but Dr.Pauls actions and his commitment to the US Constitution put him ahead of the list of canidates with conservative leanings.Yes I understand his libertarian leanings also, but at the end of the day he is a conservative,in the true sense of the word.

    −Knightflyer
  22. Anyone who supports Paul they will just see more of the incompetence of a flip flopping tyrannical leadership. I do not think that Santorum is the answer either and Romney is definitely a yes man for the big business and criminal union. As sick as this buckwheat in chief that is sitting in the idiot seat and as much as we need a change in command, the only solution is to get rid of the whole bunch of pocket liners and re-establish a government of the people, by the people and for the people. It is time to return this country to the basics and overthrow this corrupt and criminal government and return it to the constitutional government our forefathers meant it to be.
