A Paul supporter and eyewitness reports from the Colorado Republican Convention. The Romney campaign reportedly resorted to outright lies and deceit:
I just got home from the CO GOP State Convention, where the Ron Paul campaign teamed up with Santorum supporters to pull off a stunning upset, and take the majority of the 33 delegates to go to the Republican National Convention.
We pulled this off, in spite of the underhanded and deceitful tactics of the Romney campaign. The purpose of this note is to warn my fellow liberty-minded Republicans of the tactics that the Romney campaign used here to try and prevent us from winning.
CO elects 33 delegates to go to the RNC: 21 from Congressional District (CD) assemblies, and 12 from the State Convention. After realizing that they were being soundly beaten at the CD assemblies over the last several days, the Romney/establishment folks decided to resort to underhanded measures to attempt to win.
Here’s what happened:
The Paul/Santorum campaigns put together a slate of delegates known as the “Conservative Unity Slate”. Copies of this slate were passed out at the CD assemblies and State Convention. The Romney campaign printed up their own copies of the “Conservative Unity Slate”, copying the look of the Paul/Santorum slate, but substituting Romney delegates. They then proceeded to pass these fake “Unity” slates out – telling people that they were the Ron Paul slate.
Two other fine CO organizations also teamed up with the Paul/Santorum coalition, and produced their own slates listing the Paul/Santorum delegate names as the ones best representing the values of their organizations: Rocky Mountain Gun Owners published the Pro-Gun Slate, and the Christian Conservative Coalition published the CCC slate. Once again, the Romney campaign created fake Pro-Gun and CCC slates with the names of Romney delegates in place of the Paul/Santorum supporters. These they tried to pass off as the official slates from these organizations.
Gratefully we were able to catch these underhanded dealings quickly, and warn people about the false slates being produced by the Romney campaign. I personally went and stood by a Romney volunteer passing out some of the fake slates, and informed people that they were being lied to as I gave them a copy of the official slate. After a couple of minutes the Romney volunteer got so mad she went and complained to security that the Ron Paul people were “intimidating and harassing” her. Security came over to check it out, and when they heard the story they actually laughed at her.
As Ron Paul’s support continues to grow, be prepared for the establishment to resort to more and more underhanded dealings as they become desperate. Be polite, but be alert.
