Obama: celebrities determine the direction of this country?

Speaking at a $40,000-per-plate dinner that raised $2 million for his campaign, Obama told celebrities, actors, and actresses that they will be the deciding voice in the upcoming election.

CNSNews.com relates, ”You’re the tie-breaker,” he said. “You’re the ultimate arbiter of which direction this country goes.”

The dinner was held in the Manhattan home of actors Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick. Also present were Meryl Streep, fashion designer Michael Kors, and Vogue editor Anna Wintour.

The quotation, originating with the Associated Press, seems to have been edited and taken somewhat out of context. The White House website records the fuller statement like this:

Because ultimately you guys and the American people, you’re the tie-breaker.  You’re the ultimate arbiter of which direction this country goes in.

This makes things considerably different than the AP slant, which is odd because the AP is generally liberal. Wow. Has even the AP turned on Obama? I don’t think so. Reading the further remarks makes it clear the president was asking the celebrities and media to help him send his message to those American people. So, the AP’s edit job was just clarifying that position.
