DHS says AR-15 “suitable for personal defense,” orders 7,000

Ironically, a “Personal Defense Weapons Solicitation” for Department of Homeland Security (DHS) agents in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), lists an AR-15 variant as “suitable for personal defense.”
So who needs an AR-15? According to the DHS document, it might simply be those who are looking for “personal defense.”
The solicitation itself summarizes its request as for “5.56x45mm NATO, select-fire firearm” which would include the entire AR-15 and M-16 weapons family among others, and it dubs these weapons “suitable for personal defense.”
These weapons are apparently so effective at personal defense that Napolitano’s DHS requested a whopping 7,000 of them. The solicitation reads, “The scope of this contract is to provide a total of up to 7,000 5.56x45mm North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) personal defense weapons (PDW) throughout the life of this contract to numerous Department of Homeland Security components.”
